Police Chaplain Training

What are the dates and times of the Academy?

The Police & Fire Chaplain’s Training Academy trains twice yearly, usually in October and May. Registration is on Sunday evening of the Academy week with the final meal offered noon on Friday of Academy week.

Where is the Academy located?

The Police & Fire Chaplain’s Training Academy is located on the campus of the Washington Criminal Justice Training Center (WCJTC), 19010 1st Avenue South, Burien, Washington.

Will there be transportation from Sea-Tac?

Yes there will be transportation. You may request transportation information from the Comfort Inn when you register.  (A reminder to them the day before you travel is helpful.)

What do I need to bring?

In addition to class wear, a warm coat and heavy shoes for the field exercise; laptop, as all of the class materials will be given to you on a thumb drive ... no notebooks. You may also want to bring a camera to record your experiences.

Can I come late or leave early?

We understand that emergencies come up. However, in order to graduate you will need to be in attendance at and complete class assignments. If you cannot do so, we will be happy to enroll you in the next academy so that you may finish up. If you intend to accomplish personal business while here please do so outside of Academy hours.

What are dress standards for the Academy?

Business casual to include slacks and polo shirt, open collar dress shirt, etc. Please no casual wear such as shorts, athletic shoes, etc.

What are direct contact hours?

Direct contact hours are those four-hour blocks of time that you will spend in direct contact with those you are training to serve. In order to train effectively., there must be first hand exposure to those we serve.

What can I expect of the meals?

All of the meals are served cafeteria style with sufficient choices to meet nearly any dietary need. If you have specific needs please contact the Academy Registrar.

May I get a modified meal card for a special diet?

Meals are cafeteria style thus most needs can be met, however, in special case please give us plenty of notice.

What is food quality like?

Because individual tastes vary widely it is hard to answer however there is variety and choice. In two chaplain events that I attended no complaints were received concerning the price, quantity, quality, and variety of the food available.

What about phone messages while I am in attendance?

We expect that you will use your cell phone while you are at the Academy but please understand that all student cell phones will be switched off during class time. Calls may be made or received at other times.

Why do I need a background check?

Due to the location of the training it is necessary for all trainers and trainees to have a current background check.

May I invite others to attend graduation?

Yes, you may invite family, friends, department personnel, and others to graducation. You might invite them for dinner and then there will be a reception following.

What should I wear for graduation?

We consider this a formal occasion.  If you have a dress uniform please wear it.  If not we recommend coat and tie for men and dresses or pants suits for women.
