The May Academy is now history. On Thursday night we graduated 35 students...the largest number in our history...bringing us to 334 graduates in 16 Academy sessions.
Here is what some of those who attended have to say in reflection:
In addition to all of the practical instruction I received, I was repeatedly invited and encouraged to bring my genuine self to the ministry of chaplaincy. I come away with confidence that I will bring my unique gifts as a woman to this ministry.

Last year our sheriff began a Chaplaincy program assisted by Tom Rasey. Tom being a part of the ICPC and encouraged me to become a member. He encouraged me to attend the ICPC N.W. Regional meeting in Cannon Beach, OR. in January. There I met Dan Nolta who encouraged those who had not received all the basic training to come to the Academy.
What a great choice I made. I will tell you with all the college and training that I have under my belt, this was the most intense, practical & helpful training that I have ever received.

This academy was much more that just an educational experience for me. Every class took me into the real life situations and emotions I will face as I perform as a Fire or Police Chaplain. I was equipped with the knowledge and skills that I will need, and was challenged to truly search my heart. As I sat in class, I found myself thinking, either I am totally in the wrong place, I am crazy for being here, or I am right where God wants me to be! My conclusion? As a 20-year veteran in police and fire chaplaincy, when my department gave me the opportunity to attend the academy I jumped on it as someone who believes you can never have too much training. The academy and the instructors far exceeded my expectations in every area. It was a very challenging and demanding week, and at the same time it was refreshing and energizing. The instruction was true to reality, faithful to standards, practical and professional. Thank you one and all. What a blessing!

This Academy has been unlike anything I have ever done in my life...far more than I ever expected. My calling has been simple. I felt the Lord prompting me to respond after hearing a presentation from a local chaplain. This Academy has put that calling into perspective and I am even more eager to do whatever I can to fulfill this calling.

An Academy unlike any other. While head knowledge was imparted, it is the heart knowledge that was most valuable. A fifty hour period of reflection with the potential to change your life and the life of others with the soberness to count the cost. One would do well to commit themselves to this week before committing themselves to this ministry.

What I came away with was an even stronger desire to grow as a Chaplain and the best confirmation I could ever receive from God knowing what the meat and potatoes were of this opportunity and that I am exactly where I am supposed to be. I already knew this was a calling on my life before I went to the Academy and now it's as if the calling has been presented to me on a silver platter. It couldn't get any better than that!
